What’s the difference between these Retirement Community and “nursing homes”?
There are many significant differences. Here, we promote independent and assisted living. We provide support when it is required but because we are privately owned, and not government funded, we cannot provide certain nursing services, like transferring with lifts and monitoring for dementia care.
What do you mean by independent and assisted living?
Independent and assisted living means you are free to come and go as you please. There are many opportunities for you to make choices and you still manage basic activities on your own.
Can I bring my own furniture and favorite things to decorate with when I move in?
You will be expected to provide your own furniture – beds, couches, chairs, tables, etc. And we actively encourage you to decorate your suite however you want. It’s your home, and we want you to feel comfortable here.
You also have to bring your own towels and sheets.
If I don’t have a car, how will I go shopping or get personal groceries?
There are regular shuttles to neighbouring stores on a daily basis, as well as regularly planned trips to local malls and shopping areas.
What kind of things will I still be responsible for?
You will still be responsible for making appointments for doctors, foot care, dentists and the like. If needed, we provide transport services to get you to these appointments, but it is your responsibility to make them.
Planning and organizing services, such as telephone, computer hook-ups, hairdresser appointments, etc… are also still your responsibility.
How do you promote independence?
You are encouraged to continue making your own decisions, to keep connections in your community and continue any outside interests (ie church involvement). Several residents still work and many have active volunteer commitments.
Do I have to check out when I leave the building?
We have a sign-out book at the front door. Also, a receptionist is on duty from 7am – 11pm at the front desk that you can report to when you leave the building.
What health support and safety services are available?

This process includes the family, the Resident Care Managers and any other health care providers that might be involved.

Each community has a contract with the Alberta Government to deliver services to the residents. Every community also has a Resident Care Manager who works with the Home Care Nurses to deliver the service in the most effective way possible.
Are there nurses on call or on site? Or is there an in-house doctor?
There is nursing staff on site 24 hours a day. And, while there is no in-house doctor, physicians do make house calls to the Communities.
Are there meal choices?
Each meal includes 2 entrée choices. We also offer an alternative menu that must be ordered in advance.
Our menus are changed regularly and continually feature new meal options.

Can we buy the suite, or do you only allow rentals?
We only offer our suites to rent on a month-to-month basis.

Can a family member stay in my suite with me, or do you have a guest suite?
They can do either. If they stay with you in your room they must buy meal tickets. If they stay in the guest suite their 3 meals a day are included in the price.
How do you assist with the transition for new residents?
The Marketing Staff and Resident Care Managers are very involved with new residents and their families. Upon move-in, you will be introduced to your neighbours and table partners. We have a photo gallery of new residents as well as a “Welcome Tea” where you’ll meet the management team as well as other new residents. The leisure staff also does an orientation in regards to the activities.
